RADFORD, Va. - The Hampton University women’s basketball team dropped its final game of 2006 by falling to host Radford University Sunday night. The Lady Pirates fell in their final non-conference game 62-54 at the Dedmon Center in Radford, Virginia.
HU came back from a eight point halftime deficit (32-24) with 13 minutes remaining to come within three (38-35), but a jumper by Highlander Temeisha Carter sparked 9-0 run by RU as they pushed their lead to 12 with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. The Lady Pirates were able to come as close as eight points but it wasn’t enough as the Highlanders, who led by as many as 14, ran away with the victory.
Hampton (4-6, 0-1 MEAC) was led by Artavia Burn’s (Dallas, Texas/Lincoln HS) 15 points. Rachel Butler (Dallas, Texas/Lincoln HS) chipped in with 10 points.
Radford (5-6) was led by Kelli Darden and Serena White with 15 points respectively
The Lady Pirates went 21-for-54 (39%) from the field and forced 30 Highlander turnovers, but only made five second chance points compared to Radford’s 12. Nevertheless, the Pirates dominated the paint scoring 30 points in the paint compared to Radford’s 20.
Hampton had 17 points off turnovers compared to 21 by Radford but the Highlander reserves outscored HU’s bench 24-21.
The Lady Pirates will open the New Year with a conference match-up against Howard on January 3 at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C. at 7 p.m.
